The controlled flood is expected to send water over more than 150 properties, and is being done to prevent a larger, uncontrolled flood that could affect many more people.

The water was spreading so slowly, it would be outpaced by someone walking next to it, Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Steve Ashton said.
More than 24 hours after the controlled flood began, it had spread only 3.2 kilometres to the south and 1.6 kilometres to the east. Some 150 people in the region had been evacuated as a precaution, but no homes had actually been flooded and only three homes had water touching the bottom of their protective dikes.

"The controlled release at the Hoop and Holler bend is working as we had hoped," Steve Topping, an executive director with the department of Water Stewardship, told reporters.

She acknowledged this will not be easy, alluding to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s tight control over his MPs and saying it will depend on “whether they have freedom of actions or are able to support priorities that they think are important.”

It’s been a whirlwind experience for the 56-year-old lawyer and environmentalist, nearly a week after making history to become the first Green party MP ever elected, federally or provincially. May defeated Conservative Gary Lunn, the minister of state for sport, who held the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding for the past five elections.

Before the House sits in the coming weeks, May is focusing on finding “problem solvers” to staff her constituency office in the Victoria suburb of Sidney, B.C.

“Not every MP listens very well. I want to make sure my office is extremely effective in navigating through the bureaucracy and speaking to any voter who has problems, whether it’s municipal, provincial or federal.”

May also committed to holding townhall meetings every six weeks so she can remain easily accessible to voters.

 Relay for Life ball returning


For nearly 10 years, a local team has been raising money to fight cancer through Mower County Relay for Life.
They want to go bigger and better this year.
At 7 p.m. May 6 at the Holiday Inn Grand Ballroom, the IBI Data team is holding its second Black and White ball.

However, they don’t want to scare people away with the title. Dawn McDermott, one of the team organizers, said anybody can come. The event isn’t formal, they just want to draw a crowd and raise more money than last year’s efforts.
“Come as you are and have fun, and raise some money to research cancer,” McDermott said.
The IBI Data team has experienced cancer first-hand. McDermott said Dagna Simmons, who is on their team, has a husband who just completed surgery for cancer.
And she and others on the team have all known somebody who has struggled with the disease.

“We’ve all experienced cancer in some way shape or form,” she said.
McDermott is proud that the community has chipped in with the efforts. Last year, their Black and White ball drew almost 100 people and raised $4,000, coupled with team IBI Data’s own pledge of $10,000.
“The community has been so generous with their donations, and we appreciate that so much,” McDermott said.
And this year, the team is hoping for even more pledges and more people. McDermott hopes for at least three times as many people as last year.

“We want as many people here as possible.” McDermott said.

Using Electric Discharge Machines, IWC can create parts so small and so accurate that a microscope would be needed to weed out any flaws.

By the time the tested components finally come together in the form of a development watch, it is pretty much a given that it complies with the IWC ethos of good, solid craftsmanship. But nothing is left to chance, and so a batch of development mules undergo the next the phase of testing.

All the standard, expected work is done - pressure testing under water for several minutes to ensure that the cases are properly sealed, crown and pusher fatigue tests, corrosion tests - but, as is becoming clear, IWC take it one step further. The climate test, for instance, tortures a watch by subjecting it to temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius, and as high as 70 degrees Celsius at 95% humidity. Testing also includes prolonged periods of up to several weeks at either extreme, and sudden changes from one extreme to the other. At every point during this phase, automatic multilevel microphones listen to the heartbeats of the watches, ensuring that they don't fall outside of tolerance.

Given the survival of the mules, they move on next to impact testing.
